'An appetite for a community-based independent candidate in next year’s federal election was evident at the weekend, with about 100 people in attendance to hear Curtin MP Kate Chaney talk about a run at the electorate. The event at the ECU South West campus was put on by Voices for Forrest, an independent body part of a loosely connected group of organisations advocating for community-based candidates.
'Ms Chaney said despite a recent surge in inner-city seats going teal, the movement was born in the regions. “Ultimately I have huge faith in the democratic system and if there is enough energy then it will happen.”
